"Woof, woof!" Yes, that is a dog bark that can be felt through vibrations and it comes from Chester, the hearing service dog that came to me from Colorado, where he was trained to become my 'hearing system'.
Chester is an almost 2 year old Spaniel Mix with part beagle in him. He is white with black speckles all over. His head is black with brown eyes, checks, and eyebrows. He has long and floppy black ears. A beautiful three piece suit of color!
He was trained to 'hear' and become a certified hearing dog by the International Hearing Dog, Inc, (IHDI) of Henderson, CO. However, since I am deaf with a limited field of vision, Chester was also trained to help me with visual effects. He does wonderful work in both areas! He is very smart and knows some sign language with commands.
International Hearing Dog, Inc is in their 30th year of training dogs to help the deaf and hard of hearing across America. Chester is the third dog I have had or worked with that was trained at IHDI. The other two dogs had a good dog life span of 14 years or older. This means that the dogs IHDI obtains from the animal shelters in the Denver area seem to be healthy dogs that will bring happiness to someone who wishes to have a new furry and fuzzy 'hearing system'!
If you are interested in a hearing dog I would encourage you to check out www.ihdi.org as you can gather a lot of information from the website. However, should there be any questions I can answer, please do not hesitate to contact me at mark.gasaway@comcast.net
